Maoist, UML pass up Madhes issues in statute amendment

Kathmandu, June 29 (ANI): Nepal's two major Communist parties have declined the Madhes-based parties' demand calling for amending the interim constitution mentioning the provision of declaring Terai an autonomous state and mass recruitment of Madhesis in the Nepal Army.

The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) and the Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) on Sunday said the Madhesi demands cannot be met stating that including the past agreements signed between the government and the agitating groups in the interim constitution will lead towards anarchic situation.

According to Kantipur, a meeting held between the Maoist and the UML leadership agreed not to address the Terai issues by statute amendment, but through political terms, UML leader Amrit Kumar Bohora informed.

The meeting held at Maoist chairman Puspa Kamal Dahal's residence. It was decided in the meeting to continue discussion with the Nepali Congress (NC) and the Madhes-based parties to run the Constituent Assembly session smoothly.

The Madhesi lawmakers have been disrupting the parliamentary meeting of the Constituent Assembly since Thursday stating that Madhesi demands were not included in the proposal calling for a fifth amendment to the interim constitution tabled by the government at the parliamentary secretariat. (ANI)
