New Delhi, Fri, 28 Nov 2008 ANI

New Delhi, Nov 28 (ANI): National capital Delhi is all geared up for elections on Saturday, under a tight security blanket, in the backdrop of the Mumbai terror attacks.

About 70,000 security personnel will be deployed to ensure free and fair elections to the Legislative Assembly.

A total of 863 candidates are in the fray for 69 seats of the 70-member Assembly polls. About 10.7 million voters are eligible to decide the electoral fortunes of 863 candidates.

Elections will be held in 69 out of the total 70 constituencies while the polling for Rajendra Nagar seat, where BJP candidate Puran Chand Yogi allegedly committed suicide during campaigning, will take place on December 13.The stakes in this elections are high for Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for the past ten years, who faces voters on development agenda while BJP led by its Chief Ministerial candidate V K Malhotra is hoping to cash in on anti-incumbency and BSP's 'spoiler effect' on the Congress.Though Congress has not declared its Chief Ministerial candidate, the party has given clear indication that if voted to power, Dikshit will have a "third innings".

A total of 79 observers have been deputed by the Election Commission to oversee the elections.

Polling in the 69 Assembly constituencies will be held in 10,985 booths located in 2509 premises.

The EC has identified 346 polling stations as hypersensitive and 1218 others as sensitive, out of a total of 11,044 booths.

Counting of votes will take place on December 8. The term of the present Legislative Assembly of Delhi is expiring on December 17. (ANI)
