CPM politburo to meet over Indo-US nuclear deal
New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): To discuss the current political crisis stemming from disagreement between the United Progressive Alliance and the Left on the Indo-US nuclear deal, a 15-member Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM)'s politburo is holding a meeting in New Delhi today.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Prakash Karat on Friday, said, ''The renewed bid by the Prime Minister to go to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is squarely responsible for the on-going political crisis.''
The Congress called Left's opposition to the deal ideological and not rational.
The politburo will discuss the current political situation and the course of action of how to move ahead with the deal.
The meeting would be attended by top leaders including the Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura.
CPM's Central Committee has already empowered the politburo to take all necessary steps on the deal, which could also include withdrawing support to the UPA government.
Though there are strong indications of the 39-member of the Samajwadi Party falling in line with the Congress on the nuclear deal, the Left parties are striving hard to woo it back.
The United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) and the SP are expected to take a decision on the issue on July 3. (ANI)
