Mumbai train blasts accused arrested in London

National, Tue, 25 Nov 2008 IANS

Mumbai/New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS) The Interpol in London has arrested Rahil Shaikh, one of the key accused in the Mumbai suburban train bombings that killed 187 people over two years ago.

The international police organisation has sought details of all the accused of the Mumbai terror act from India's premier investigation agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which acts as Interpol arms in India, CBI sources told IANS in Delhi.

But police officials in Mumbai declined to go on record about the arrest in London.

A series of bombings July 11, 2006, ripped through local trains in the Indian financial capital that also left a whopping 817 injured. Shaikh is accused of organising funds for the blasts.

Shaikh, a suspected activist of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), had also allegedly helped two Pakistanis involved in the seven deadly blasts on suburban trains that day escape from India.

The powerful bombs, in which RDX was used, were placed in the first class men's compartments of suburban trains during the evening peak hours.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad of the Mumbai Police, which probed the blasts, has so far chargsheeted 28 accused in the case.
