The worldwide Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), places Indian on the 74th spot among 180 countries in the world, two places step up from the last count. The index was prepared by an independent international non-government organisation-The Transparency International (TI) known for addressing corruption worldwide.
The annual global corruption report released on June 25, however, put the neighbouring country Pakistan much higher at 140th while China ranked 73rd- a place down in comparison to 2007 index. Corruption in Iran, Libya and Nepal are also at high rate ranking 133, 134 and 135 respectively.
Countries like Russia stands on 145th place while Sri Lanka and Maldives are a bit moderate place at 96th and 90th respectively. However, Bhutan is the least Asian country at 41st slot.
Tracking prevalence of corruption worldwide, the organisation ranked United States at 20th and United Kingdom at 13th spot.
Among the least corrupted nations worldwide, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Singapore and Sweden occupy the top five spots while the Myanmar and Somalia are at the bottom.
TI Corruption Perceptions Index
The annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), first released in 1995, is the best known tool for a comparative assessment of country’s integrity performance. The index is a composite study by various independent institutions, business people, country analysts and who focus corruption in public sector.
The CPI ranked 180 countries by their perceived levels of corruption, as determined by opinion polls, surveys and high public standing individuals from all sections of society including academicians, lawyers, journalist, members from student body, non-government organisation, independent welfare organisation, political analysts and even public servants including politicians.
The mission of Transparency International is to bring all the concerned institutions or individuals in the process of designing and implementing systematic reforms that will establish honesty and good governance.
