Asia, Sun, 23 Nov 2008 IANS

Jakarta, Nov 22 (Xinhua) An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 rocked Bengkulu province of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, Saturday evening, but no tsunami warning was issued, the meteorology agency here said.

The quake struck at 23.01 Jakarta time (1601 GMT) with its epicentre 142 km southwest of Bnegkulu city, the capital of Bengkulu province, and 23 km under sea bed, said Hardiatno, an official of the agency.

'We do not issue a warning for tsunami,' he told Xinhua.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 3 to 4 MMI (modified mercally intensity) at Ketahun and Mukomujko towns and 2 to 3 MMI at Kepahiang town, said Hardiatno.

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable zone, the so-called 'the Pacific Ring of Fire', where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia meet, causing frequent volcanic movements.
