Over 1,500 polling booths in Delhi sensitive, hypersensitive

New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS) Over 1,500 booths in Delhi were Friday declared as 'sensitive' and 'hypersensitive' for the Nov 29 assembly elections here - a five-fold increase over the number in the last election in 2003, an official said.

'There are 1,218 sensitive and 346 hypersensitive polling booths in Delhi,' Satbir Silas Bedi, chief electoral officer of Delhi, told reporters.

She said there are three parameters for deciding the polling station as sensitive.

'If the polling booth has a history of violation of model code of conduct, there is a history of law and order problem in polling station, and if the photographs are less in the electoral rolls.'

She said police officials and the deputy commissioner, revenue, decide about declaring a booth sensitive.

During the 2003 assembly elections, Delhi had 211 sensitive polling stations and 29 hypersensitive polling stations.

Bedi earlier said that at least 1,000 booths would be sensitive in Delhi.

She said the police, the central paramilitary personnel and home guards will be pressed into poll duty.

A total of 10.7 million people, nearly 25 percent more than in 2003, will be eligible to vote in over 11,000 booths this year to elect a new 70-member legislature in Delhi.
