New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) The Congress Thursday claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued gag orders on its chief ministerial candidate V.K. Malhotra and challenged him to a debate with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
'The BJP has issued gag orders on Malhotra and asked him to avoid speaking in debates being organised by news channels,' Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal told reporters.
According to Sibal, Malhotra has turned down invitations of several news channels for a debate with Dikshit.
'The BJP knows that if he (Malhotra) speaks, then the party's share of vote in Delhi will go down further,' Sibal said.
Sibal claimed that Malhotra doesn't know anything about Delhi's problems and doesn't have any solutions for them, or even suggestions about how to beautify the city. Therefore if Malhotra speaks, he will lose votes, Sibal said.
On Wednesday, Sibal had said that Malhotra is not a 'fit candidate' for the chief minister's post in Delhi.
Appealing to the BJP to allow Malhotra speak, Sibal said: 'The people in Delhi, and we, want to listen to the party's chief ministerial candidate. People want to know what he thinks about Delhi.'
'I request him (Malhotra) to rise above the party level and speak his feelings. After all he lives in a democratic country,' Sibal said.
Asked if Dikshit would be chief minister for a third time if the Congress returns to power, Sibal skirted the issue saying: 'I am nobody to make a comment on this.'
