Jim Corbett (Uttarakhand), Nov 18 (ANI): Wildlife officials at Jim Corbett National Park on Monday discovered an elephant gored to death by another tusker.

The carcass of the badly mauled elephant, about 35 years old, was found by officials near a river flowing through the park.

"We found that an elephant was lying dead and its body has wounds from the tusker of another elephant. We are searching the entire region. There are lots of bloodstains in the area. Another elephant must have chased it far and the animal finally fell down and died due to the excess bleeding from its wounds," said D.S. Rawat, a Sub Divisional Officer in the park.

According to reports, around 11 elephants have died at Jim Corbett Park this year.

Situated on the foothills of the Himalayas, the Corbett Park is famous for its wide population of tigers, leopards and elephants.

The place is known as the best place in northern India to observe the magnificent Asian elephants at a fairly close range.

India has more than 50 per cent of Asiatic elephants but the population has been dwindling due to frequent poaching.

It is estimated that 35,000 to 50,000 elephants are left in the wild, down from more than 100,000 a century ago as compared to 600,000 of their larger-eared African cousins. A subspecies in Borneo numbers little more than 1,000 animals. (ANI)
