Nawaz Sharif barred from contesting election

New Delhi, Tue, 24 Jun 2008 NI Wire

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been barred again from contesting the parliamentary by-elections scheduled this week. Lahore high court has cancelled the decision of election commissioner by prohibiting him to contest the election on Monday.

The high court has upheld the 1999 court's conviction in which court had convicted him in the charges of hijacking a plane in October 1999, when present President and Retired Army chief former General Parvez Musharraf was returning to the country.

On the basis of this conviction and the nomination paper in which he was found tainted, the Lahore high court has made him ineligible for standing in the election fray.

An unknown person, who is not directly affecting the election as not being in the contest has challenged the election commission’s green signal of making him (Nawaz Sharif) eligible for contesting election in Lahore high court.

A spokesperson of Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML (N)) has informed media that Nawaz Sharif, the president of PML (N) is not going to challenge the decision, as he is unable to recognise the judges of Supreme Court.

According to spokesperson, ‘the sitting judges have been imposed on the post during the emergency period in November 2007 and PML (N) does not assess them ‘legal’ appointment’, and ‘Nawaz Sharif is not going to legalise the ‘provisional constitutional order’ judges by challenging the decision of high court.’ as per cited spokesperson.

Nawaz Sharif, however, did not protest the court’s decision directly but his indirectly representatives have opposed the decision. The activists of the PML (N) are protesting this decision and marching on the road.

Nawaz Sharif, as per the sources said PML (N) is going to enhance the pressure over Pakistani Peoples Party (PPP) for restoring the sacked judges as PML (N) can go for challenge the Lahore HC’s decision.

After election, PPP and PML (N) have tied the knot for impeaching president Musharraf and restoring the ‘real’ democracy.

Nawaz Sharif has filled a nomination paper from NA-123 seats after getting the approval of election commission. There are still eight national assembly seats as well as 30 provincial seats vacant in the country due to several reasons on which the polling is scheduled on June 26, 2008.
