CM sends second invitation, GJM adamant on Tripartite meet

Kolkata, Thu, 19 Jun 2008 NI Wire

With his sole purpose to resolve the Darjeeling crisis which has completely disrupted the customary life of common people, the West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has invited for the second time to the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) to come and participate in the meeting with the government.

GJM president Bimal Gurung has rejected the Chief Minister's proposal, instead he advocated for the tripartite meeting to be held in New Delhi attended by his party, West Bengal government and the Centre.

“We are ready for the talk with Chief Minister, but not here. We will talk to him in Delhi at a tripartite meeting attended by the trio- West Bengal, Centre and his party,” said Gurung.

In his letter to the GJM chief, the Chief Minister has mentioned that all party meeting held on June 17 has decided to seek political solution through discussions to this grave crisis and so invited Gurung for talks on the Darjeeling issue,” said the state chief secretary A K Deb while talking to reporters.

In his letter the Bhattacharjee has pressed for unconditional talks with the GJM. But rejecting any such bilateral meeting between the government and the GJM, party's general secretary Roshan Giri asked for tripartite meeting to be attended by his party, West Bengal government and the Centre.

“Please come and sit with us,” said the CM in the letter as quoted by Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb. He said the CM has not mentioned any date for holding discussion leaving the decision at the discretion of GJM chief.

When asked about his party's holding talks with the government, Giri said, “The meeting is not possible here. We are still stood on our demand of holding tripartite discussion at Delhi involving all the three-West Bengal government, GJM and the Centre. We are waiting for the Centre's call. We have no any precondition for talks, but will carry our sole demand there.”

Earlier the government had called the GJM chief to participate in a separate meeting with the Chief Minister on June 18 over the Darjeeling issue. But the GJM had rejected the offer saying that the government wanted to talk on the developmental issue, normalcy of the situation in the hills rather than their demand of separate Gorkhaland state.

The first such proposal of holding talks with the government was rejected by the Morcha on June 13.

Pranab Mukherjee had earlier nodded for tripartite talks, but rejected to accept any precondition and also ruled out any possibility of splitting Bengal for the second time to create a separate Gorkhaland.

In the meantime, Sikkim's link with the rest of the country owing to the GJM's indefinite strike in the Darjeeling hills has entered into the fourth day. The shutdown has completely paralysed the national highway, NH 31A, which is Sikkim's lifeline.
