Congress partners JD (S) for RS and MLC seats

New Delhi, Tue, 17 Jun 2008 NI Wire

The Bharatiya Janata Party's stunning success in the Karnataka's Legislative Assembly perhaps sowed the seeds of friendship, lost after JD (S) withdrawn support from Congress' government during 2006, between the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) as the two older-alliances again signed a political pact on Monday for the approaching Rajya Sabha and the legislative council seats in the state.

The deal, though is made short duration in nature for the RS and LC polls, but it could be resulted into long-lasting effect as the analysts believe; the Congress might fray the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the JD(S).

Prithviraj Chavan, Congress general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, said that there would be floor co-ordination with the JD(S) in Karnataka assembly and the two parties would work for the presiding officers for the legislative council to be selected from its own flock.

As per the Monday's deal, the Congress secured the support of JD (S) to get two of its candidates-former Maharashtra governor and Karnataka's ex-chief minister SM Krishna and the mining industrialist Anil Lad- elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, where the poll is to take place on June 26. The Congress, in return, will support the JD (S) candidates in the legislative council seats, the polls for that are to be held the same day.

Elections are due for four Rajya Sabha and seven legislative council seats in Karnataka, to be conducted on June 26.

Though the second largest party in the state, Congress, has nominated ex-chief minister SM Krishna for the assured seats from its quota, but its second candidate, Arun Lad needs the support of 28 JD (S) to reach the Rajya Sabha. Lad had contested the assembly poll on the Congress ticket, but was defeated with elbow margin.

The ruling BJP has fielded two candidates for the Rajya Sabha-former Bihar governor Rama Jois and Prabhakar Kore, a leading educationist from north Karnataka and four candidates for the remaining four legislative council seats. While the Congress has fielded its lone candidate, M V Rajashekaran for the legislative council, the JD (S) has two in the fray.

All the candidates filed their nominations the last day on Monday and every winning candidates would need to get at least 46 votes for the Rajya Sabha seats, while for the MLC candidate must get at least 29 votes.

The alliance with JD (S), which the Congress was badly in need, might act as a survivor for the party as the UPA in Tamil Nadu is facing serious trouble after the differences arose between DMK chief M Karunanidhi and PMK supremo S Ramadoss. At present, DMK has 16 legislators and PMK has 6 legislators in the UPA government.

The Congress has already started working in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh to bring its annoyed partner, TRS into UPA fold. TRS which had withdrew support from the UPA government, the sources say, also in mood of forging fresh alliance. Alliances and counter-alliances among different political parties have been commenced in view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls due next year.
