Property allocation above board: Amar Singh

New Delhi, Nov 12 (IANS) Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh Wednesday questioned the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to seek the Supreme Court's permission to take action against him for illegally obtaining land in Lucknow during the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav regime.

'I was not allotted property in the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category,' he told reporters here.

Reacting to a newspaper report, based on which Chief Minister Mayawati's government conducted an inquiry and filed an application with the Supreme Court Nov 8 seeking permission to take action, Amar Singh pointed out that plots were allotted in the A, B, C, D, E, Lower Income Group (LIG) and EWS categories and that his allocation was made in the E category.

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) had allotted Singh a plot in 1994 in the EWS category, the newspaper report had said.

Alleging political motivation on Mayawati's part, Singh said: 'I was alloted E-5/845, Vikas Khand, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. The newspaper correspondent misunderstood and concluded that E category is EWS.'

The state government's move comes in the wake of the Allahabad High Court, which restrained itself from initiating action against the Samajwadi Party leader, giving liberty to the state government to approach the Supreme Court for further proceedings.

Singh also reiterated his demand for an inquiry into the alleged Rs 180 billion scam in telecom spectrum allocation.

Singh, who had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue, said: 'An inquiry should be conducted in to the matter. Communication Minister A. Raja should be come out clean in this issue.'

Raja had dismissed any scam in spectrum allocation and offered to quit if his decision to allocate 2G spectrum to telecom companies was found to be wrong.

Singh also alleged that many national and multinational telecom companies, including ke Vodafone, Airtel and Idea were violating TRAI norms by utilising more than their share of spectrum allocated to them.
