Had he not been addicted to coke, Oz goalie could have been a Chelsea star

London, Wed, 12 Nov 2008 ANI

London, Nov.12 (ANI): The story of Mark Bosnich is one of triumph and tragedy.

Chelsea goalie Bosnich was one of the first players to have his career ruined by cocaine.

In 1999, the Aussie keeper rejoined Manchester United - his first English club - after seven years with Aston Villa - and instantly became a Premiership champion. On 45,000 dollars a week, Bosnich, according to The Sun, had the whole world in his hands, but within three years his career was over. He failed a drugs test and that saw him sacked from Chelsea and banned from the game for nine months.

He lost his supermodel girlfriend Sophie Anderton, his one million pound home, his livelihood and his self-respect.

Bosnich, is now 36 and has never returned to top-flight football. He said: "I never touched drugs until I was 31 - but once it got hold of my life, it became a massive struggle to break free. The worst times were when I thought of doing stupid things, not so much because of the ban but because of what was going on with my girlfriend. I was slowly killing myself but I didn't care."

At the height of his drug taking, the star was snorting up to ten grams of cocaine a day.

Earlier this year, he was declared bankrupt and now he has been released following a seven-game comeback bid in his home country with minnows Central Coast Mariners. (ANI)
