Iran test-fires new missile

Gulf-Middle East, Wed, 12 Nov 2008 IANS

Tehran, Nov 12 (Xinhua) Iran has successfully test fired a new surface-to-surface missile, Press TV reported Wednesday quoting the defence ministry.

Defence Minister Brigadier General Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said the new generation of fuel-efficient missile was developed by Iran's aerospace group, according to the state television.

Iran's Air Force chief Brigadier General Ahmad Miqani Tuesday had said that his force has built up a 'solid barrier' to defend the country's airspace.

'The air force has built up a solid barrier against any kind of strike, using up-to-date equipment as well as unique military tactics,' Miqani was quoted by Press TV as saying.

Iran has test-fired its Shahab-3 missile capable of hitting targets within a range of 2,000 km, saying that its missile capabilities are 'a defensive tool against invasions.'

The United States and its allies have accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear programme. Iran has denied the US charges.
