June 27: Sania Mirza in the first round of Ladies’ Singles accomplished a comfortable win over Russian Yaroslava Shvedova and moves to the second round of Wimbledon Championship.
Playing on Court No.6, she defeated Yaroslava in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-3 and the match lasted almost for an hour. She however needs to improve as far as her second serve points and doubles faults are concerned.
Currently ranking at number 44 th she looks confident and just a bit consistency can take India’s chance forward. Sania in her 3 rd appearance in Wimbledon would try to improve her previous performances. Both in 2005 and 2006 she was qualified to the second round of the championship and hence needs to improve as per her ranking.
However, she has to now face stiff competition in the second round where her match is with another Russian and 11 th seed Nadia Petrova who has also achieved a comfortable win over American Vania King in instant sets 6-0, 6-1.
Sania Mirza with her stardom carries a lot hope of Indian as she reached the 4 th round of US Open in 2005. Though her present form is a bit concern after her return from injury but her forehand and a faster grass surface may provide some advantage to her.
Mirza is also a part of Women’s doubles with Shahar Peer and Mixed doubles with Indian Mahesh Bhupathi. Shahar Peer from Israel with a best doubles performance in 2005 as she reached the quarter final may present some competitive matches with Mirza.
