Don't have photo ID card, show arms license to vote

New Delhi, Nov 11 (IANS) Delhi residents who don't have photo identity cards can show their arms license, passport or driving license to cast their ballots at the assembly polls later this month but ration cards will not be acceptable, an election official said Tuesday.

'Around 20 percent of our voters still don't have photo ID cards. Keeping this in mind, we have allowed 12 other documents including arms license with photograph to help citizens cast their votes,' Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer Satbir Silas Bedi said.

The 12 documents, which will be accepted as proof identification include arms license, passport, PAN card, service identity cards with photos issued by government offices, government bank and postal passbooks with photos, student ID cards, property documents, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and other backward classes certificate with a picture, pension documents, freedom fighters identity cards, and physically handicapped certificate with a photo.

'The ration card is not acceptable,' she added.

The election office has also asked voters to come with their family head if coming in a group for identification.

'It is necessary that the members of the family in whose name the document is issued identifies the other members personally,' Bedi said.

With over 10.7 million eligible voters, Delhi goes to polls Nov 29, to elect a new 70-member assembly.
