Gujjar leaders nod for talks with Raje government

Special Correspondent, Fri, 06 Jun 2008 NI Wire

Eventually after 14 days of Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan, Colonel K S Bainsla became ready for conditional talks with the state government. The talks will be carried out hopefully on Friday.

The leader of the Gujjar agitation demanding ST status to community, colonel Bainsla said he was ready to send a delegation of community leaders for dialogue with the Rajasthan government, but said “I will not join personally any parleys.” He was talking at a press conference on Thursday evening.

However, he added a condition for the state government to follow before commencing the actual dialogue process and that the Raje government allowed national Gujjar leaders to reach Pilupura, because he wanted to consult them before a delegation meet the government.

"Let them come here and we'll decide the future course of action. We will together form the committee that will hold talks with government," Bainsla said to reporters.

Bainsla's softening approach after a fortnight bloody agitation with the police and the government is being viewed at a backdrop of a letter from CM Vasundhara Raje renewing an invitation to dialogue.

Earlier the day, the state government had held a high-level meeting with the senior cabinet ministers and BJP leaders where the decision was taken to send a fresh invitation for talks to Bainsla, requesting him to come to Jaipur and take part in the dialogue.

Last week Bainsla had sent a signal to hold talks with Vasundhara Raje's government, if she showed "inclination and a positive attitude."

Vasundhara Raje government had sent a letter to the Prime Minister recommending 4 to 6 percent reservation for Gujjars as part of a nomadic tribe under the category of de-notified tribes, different from SC category. But the Central government after consultation with the Ministry of Law and Justice had returned the letter by saying the letter had many lacunas and was against the principle of the constitution.

Contradictory statement was noticed initially from Bainsla, once he said as soon as he received the letter in which six per cent quota has been recommended he would call off the agitation and as per the media report he had also been caught saying 'no approval' against any measures except a complete ST status.

However, at last he was quoted saying he was ready to call off the stir agitation and hold dialogue with the Raje government once he received the copy of the recommendation letter.

Meanwhile when Bainsla was nodding for sending the delegation for talks with the state government, fresh violence erupted between Gujjars and police in Dausa district in the late evening on Thursday. At least 10 Gujjars were reportedly injured in the incident, which occurred while police was trying to clear a blockade near Sethal road.

Gujjars were also found bisected over the cremation of bodies. While one group was in favour of common cremation at the protest site, another group was in support of the family of the deceased who wanted to take back the dead bodied to their villages for final rituals.

As per the last report the Friday talk was to be held in evening, but the Gujjars leader hinted that they might come to Jaipur only on Saturday. The dialogue process might shift for another day.
