Earth Eco-Warrior Awards-2008 for environmental workers

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Vice President of India, Shri Mohd Hamid Ansari on Thursday (June 05) presented the Earth Eco-Warrior Awards-2008 to the eminent environment conservers for their outstanding work done towards the cause of preserving our natural surroundings at a function organised by Earth Matters Foundation in New Delhi.

The award function recognises individuals in improving the environment and celebrates the spirit of conservation who has been silently working to protect our natural heritage and resources.

Expressing his concern over the environmental degradation, the Vice President said that instead of celebrating once in a year, the Environment Day should be celebrated everyday of the year. He added that many species and rare plants have disappeared and time has come to awaken people towards conservation and ecological balance.

He also pleaded for the need to carry the message of environment protection to every classroom, every office and to everybody. He called upon the people to conserve water.

The Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Shri Namo Narain Meena in his address said that no development programme is feasible unless backed by environmental awareness and education. In view of the needs of the present and future generations, education at schools, colleges and at the common man’s level is imperative.

Noted environment conserver, Shri Mike Pandey and Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati, Shri B.S.Lalli, also addressed on the occasion.

The award is an effort of the Earth Matters Foundation headed by Mike Pandey which encourages people to improve and protect their immediate environment by participating in various activities to create habitat for animal welfare.

List of awardees include – Mr. Suraj Mewara, Barmer, Rajasthan; Ms. Sonia Ghosh, Delhi; Ms. Monali Manohar Warwade, Bandrapur, Maharashtra; Ms. Madhu Bhatanagar, Delhi; Mr. Abdul Wadud Banatwala, Junagadh, Gujarat; Mr. G.V.Reddy (IFS Officer); Mr. Chewang Norphel (Glacier Man), Leh, Ladakh; Mr. M.Y.Yoganathan, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu; Mr. John Abraham, Mumbai, Maharashtra; Mr. Tilak Vij, Delhi; Dr. D.N.Chaudhary and Mr. Rahul Rohitashwa, Bhagalpur, Bihar; Dr. Madhu Lal Valliate, Jaipur, Rajasthan; Ms. Komal Parekh and Mr. Mahesh Parekh, Durg, Chhatishgarh and Brahmanand Pandey, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
