RSP withdraws UPA-Left coordination committee

Kolkata, Tue, 03 Jun 2008 NI Wire

A mixed blend of reactions expressed by leaders of different political parties after RSP (Revolutionary Socialist Party) keeping behind all its Left partners in taking a first drastic step of pulling out of the UPA-Left co-ordination committee, which has been defunct for the past one-and-half years.

Supporting indirectly the RSP step, the CPI (M) too called the UPA-Left platform as ineffective and defunct, while the other two Left parties did not give much support to the novel approach, but refused to comment in detail.

CPI leader and West Bengal Water Investigation minister Nandagopal Bhattacharya dubbed RSP's move as unexpected.

The Congress-led UPA government had formed the “coordination committee” with Left to seek vital opinions of it on major policies, but after working together for 18 months it has now become ineffective and inactive, said Biman Bose, the politburo member and the Left Front chairman. In present situation, to be in the committee or not is more or less same.

The RSP though have pulled its name from the one UPA-Left opinion seeking committee, but will be the part of the second functional committee on the Indo-US nuclear deal and will try every bit to restrict the government from going ahead with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency).

The party is also trying to convince other Left partners to seek withdrawal from the UPA government as it has so far been failed on different fronts include curbing the soaring price rise of essential commodities and also neglecting the Left's demand to not hike the price of crude oils.

RSP general secretary T J Chandrachoodan said after concluding the two-day meeting of the party's central committee on Sunday that his proposal on reviewing support to the UPA would have got the back of other Left parties. To a query whether the RSP's next step would be to withdraw support from the UPA despite other Left parties rejection, Chandrachoodan said ‘you can not take every decision independently. Decisions on some vital subjects need collective approach’.

Earlier, on the grave worrying issue of soaring price rise of essential commodities of daily needs, agrarian crisis, the nuclear deal, and hike in petrol prices, the CPI had proposed the Left should review its relation with the government; but the party withheld from discussion.

The Central Committee has also fixed Aug 09 to hold discussion of Left parties and other like-minded intellectuals on the role of the Left parties in the formation of third Left Front.
