New Delhi, Nov 10 (IANS) The traffic situation was grim in the capital Monday, as roads near the deputy commissioner's office in the New Delhi district on Shahjahan Road were blocked by supporters of candidates filing nomination for the assembly elections.
Since morning there was a heavy rush around the commissioner's office, as several candidates poured in to file nominations. The nomination process for Nov 29 assembly elections closes Nov 11.
The day began with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit filing her nomination - who reached with over 500 supporters shouting slogans and dancing to drumbeats. Stopped by the police a few yards before the commissioner's office, excited supporters paraded outside the office blocking the main road entirely.
Adding to the mess, a hoard of another hundred Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supporters on motorbikes arrived at the spot shouting slogans.
The roads leading to the New Delhi district office, including arterial roads in the circuit of Akbar Road, Janpath in central Delhi, got choked.
The traffic situation was chaotic as vehicles were diverted for almost three hours. Cars were parked in a haphazard manner across the blocked roads, making it difficult for vehicles to weave in and out of the area.
Other commuters had to walk long distances to catch any mode of transport, as buses and auto-rickshaws were not plying in the vicinity.
"I waited for the bus for over an hour and came to know that the route has been diverted. I will now have to walk a kilometre to another stop. I'm already running late," said Renu Bhargave, 57, at the Akbar Road bus stop.
Expressing helplessness over the situation, Joint Commissioner (Traffic) S.M. Srivastava said: "We had made prior arrangements for the traffic, but the onus is also on motorists. When additional traffic comes, it is bound to cause congestion."
