Congress WC meeting to take stock of defeat and evolve strategies

New Delhi, Sat, 31 May 2008 NI Wire

A number of issues comprising price rise and inflation, Congress debacle in the Karnataka's Assembly polls, hike in the price of petroleum products, and terrorism at large will be discussed at the meeting of the Congress Working Committee on Saturday in New Delhi.

Though the meeting earlier was proposed to be held in recent future, but the Congress's consecutive failure in Karnataka's assembly elections after Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh fuelled the meeting to be held at the earliest.

The government was to hike the petroleum prices on Thursday but planned to postpone owing to proposed CWC meeting as the government perhaps would have thought to take prior nod of AICC Chief Sonia Gandhi.

Two years back in 2006 government had to face humiliation and had to partial rollback the hike in petro products after Sonia Gandhi and Congress party objected the price rise of petrol and diesel. This time Manmohan Singh wants to move with caution.

The working committee meeting was to be held on Friday, but could not take place and proposed for the next day. Meanwhile, Manmohan Singh convened party’s general meeting at his residence to take stock of the current situation and to discuss over the government’s proposal to increase the price of petro products. No decision could be taken on Friday.

The party would also analyse the cause of defeat in assembly polls whose superficial reason at the first instance could not be negated from inflation and terrorism, which ruined the party's hope to cut the strings of defeats.

Inflation is the most worrisome and grave issue that have been stood upright before the UPA government, which despite implementing several measures to control the price rise, has so far been failed to curb the inflation and is going constantly up. In comparison to last week the inflation rate has further augmented from 7.82 percent to 8.1 percent this week. The government has been placed at the core of criticism and constantly attacking by the Opposition BJP on the issue of curbing terrorism.

The year 2008 is very crucial for all the political parties especially the ruling Congress which is gradually losing public support and sympathy, and facing one by one poll debacle. On the other hand the second most largest and strong party, BJP would leave no stone unturned to stick people who had been deflected from the Congress party and spreading tentacles to the people residing even in remotest areas.

So the Congress has convened the meeting of the highest decision-making body of the party to take stock of the current political situations and the party's prospects in the forthcoming assembly elections so as to evolve the strategies for the Lok Sabha polls due next year and the assembly elections, this year. The party would also like to discuss organisational reforms perhaps young leadership would be provided additional responsibilities on their shoulders.

The Assembly elections are due this year in five states-Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Jammu & Kashmir.

The focus of the CWC would be on to take a lesson from the successive poll defeat in past and develop strategies for the future to turn the fortune in favour of the Congress party.
