Burney deported, probe order issued

New Delhi, Sat, 31 May 2008 NI Wire

In a disgusting and embarrassing note, the former Pakistan human rights minister and renowned human rights activists Ansar Burney was sent back from New Delhi airport just he reached New Delhi on Friday night and did not allow him entry into the city.

The actual cause of his deportation has not yet been confirmed as both the Home Ministry and Foreign Ministry made a duet tone as “they don't know why he was sent back. Meanwhile, an inquiry into the matter has been ordered by the Foreign Ministry.

Sources said Burney was sent back because of a 'lookout notice' issued against him, but the Home and Foreign Ministry ruled out any fact in it and expressed their ignorance about the matter.

Reports also suggest that the occurrence of whole incident could be a mistake at the level of Foreigners Regional Registration Office.

Whatever be the reason, the matter indeed led India into embarrassing situation. Dealing with Burney could have been done differently in a respected manner.

Ansar Burney do not need today to introduce himself, is one such person, who is attributed as being the ‘first man’ to launch the ‘concept of human rights’ in Pakistan almost 30 years ago and is continuing to fight for this just cause ever since. He is also not a new face to India, as Indian citizens who earlier did not know him, recognised him, as was instrumental in release of Indian national Kashmir Singh, who was languishing in Pakistan jail for 35 long years as death-row prisoner convicted of espionage after being arrested in 1973.

He is also working hard for the release of another Indian national Sarabjit Singh, the capital punishment awardee prisoner in Pakistan, who was convicted on the charge of his alleged involvement in four bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan that killed 14 people. Burney also visited India in the first week of April to amass evidence, which could prove his innocence and thus save his life.

But, the recent development now could ruin the hope of Sarabjit’s release. Even he was not given any reason by the immigration official as why he was being deported. Quick probe into the matter is essential to know why did this happen.

Burney however said he would not make the incident as any excuse and would continue his efforts in securing the release of Sarabjit Singh including other Indians languishing in Pakistani jails and also work for the release of Pakistani nationals lodged in Indian prisons.
