British sailor aims to become first yachtswoman to sail both ways round world

London, Nov 8 (ANI): A female British sailor is aiming to become the first yachtswoman to circumnavigate the world both ways, surpassing the feats of Ellen MacArthur.

According to a report in the Telegraph, the sailor in question is Dee Caffari, who will set sail in her state-of-the-art 60 ft yacht on November 9, at the start of the Vendee Globe race.

She had earlier sailed the 'wrong' way around the world in 2006 when she undertook the Aviva solo global challenge.

The 'wrong' way involves sailing against the prevailing winds and currents, going round Cape Horn first.

However, Caffari said that sailing the 'right' way would be a totally different sailing experience.

Her journey will take her down the Atlantic, and round the Cape of Good Hope. She will then traverse the Southern Ocean, before returning to France via Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America.

Caffari is due to depart from Les Sables d'Olonne on the western coast of France as part of a 30 strong Vendee field.

"My main aim for this Vendee Globe is to get round and complete the double world first," she said. "I want to say that I am the first woman to have sailed solo, non-stop both ways around the world," she added.

"Ellen MacArthur sailed in this race in 2000 and completed it in 95 days and to beat her record would be brilliant," Caffari said. (ANI)
