Congress again into brawl of controversy

New Delhi, Thu, 22 May 2008 Vikash Ranjan

Congress has certainly been brought on the back foot by his own Home Minister Shivraj Patil after issuing controversial rhetoric when comparing Sarabjit Singh, an Indian national lodged in Pakistan's jail, with Afzal Guru- the Parliament attack mastermind.

The meaning of his statement comparing the two- Afzal and Sarabjit states that latter too was a terrorist or else the former was innocent.

As Afzal can not be established innocent because he was convicted after Indian court found him guilty in Parliament attack case. The rest becomes Sarabjit, who too was convicted by Pakistan's court after finding his involvement in 1990 serial bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan that killed 14 people.

While Afzal Guru has been convicted of providing support to Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad militants in launching an attack on the heart of India's democracy.

True, no any government has right to plead for his nationals indulged in inhumane crime in other countries. But, perhaps Patil forgot that the case of “mistaken identity” is linked with Sarabjit Singh and if we accept Sarabjit's family's views, he was strayed into Pakistan from his village located on the border.

Obviously, the excuse of his family members can not be acceptable that how he reached Pakistan, but it is also not proved that Sarabjit Singh was not Manjit Singh. And it is the only pretext the Indian government has bent upon.

Moreover, if we accept his rhetoric, it would mean the Congress-led UPA government has been defending the terrorist, which the Congress can never accept.

BY associating Afzal Guru's case to Sarabjit Singh's fate, the Home Minister has touched a sensitive nerve.

Shivraj Patil after facing extreme antagonism from the main Opposition Party, BJP over the issue, which he knowingly or unknowingly gifted to them, can now heave a sigh of relief after getting back by the Congress Party.

The Cabinet Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi has stood by Patil saying, “If anything has been stated by the honourable Home Minister, how can you expect that another Cabinet colleague will differ from him on the whole issue?”

Dasmunshi added that none of our ministers differ with one another; which means when Arjun Singh was proposing Rahul Gandhi's name for the post of prime minister was the unanimous decision by the Party.

Agreed, the two incidents are different and should not be interlinked. But should politicians not keep this in their mind, when they open mouth in public.

The Opposition BJP would leave no stone unturned in circling Congress over the issue, which is already facing antagonism from all quarters over rising inflation, farmers' distress, etc.

The acceptance by Kashmir Singh, an Indian prisoner freed by Pakistan, that he was engaged in spying in Pakistan has done incalculable harm to Sarabjit Singh's case. Now, the controversy generated by Patil's recent offering could affect efforts to persuade Pervez Musharraf to either pardon or commute the death sentence awarded to Sarabjit Singh.

Patil's recent remarks could spark a controversy, which the Congress would not like to face in an election year.
