The two-days meeting have been held from Monday to discuss the social security status of labours in India.
From today, ILO will hold the technical consultation with labour and employment ministry for discussing on India’s employment policy and to evolve new national employment strategy to for enhancing the employment growth to achieve the target by 2012.
According to sources, by 2012, there will be nearby 92-millions of unemployed people in India, a tough challenge for the government, but India cannot achieve this target at which India is providing employment to the needy.
“India has enjoyed impressive economic growth for more than a decade....We need to understand why employment is growing so slowly, particularly in the organised sector, and why employment in the informal sectors remains low quality,” said Leyla Tegmo-Reddy, ILO sub-regional director for South Asia.
Describing about the meeting, she said, “The meeting will take a diagnostic approach.”
Ministry has prepared a background report for the meeting that reports, ‘employment-intensive growth does not mandatory need labour-intensive technologies because it can be promoted sector-wise growth as per their nature.’ ‘Women’s contribution is very necessary for higher economic growth.’ added report.
A range of topics will be covered in the meeting, as per ILO officials including economic policies relating to macro-economics and specific sectors, labour market policies, skills development, and enterprise development particularly in micro and small enterprises.
The representatives of workers and employers, academics, Central and state government officials, Planning Commission members, Indian policy makers and Executive Director of the ILO along with other ILO’s members will attend the meeting.

| 1. | In the conclusions drawn by the tripartite group it has been agreed that labour intensive sectors are to be located. Thematially all parties agreed that unless these sectors are given push the growth in the employment does not seem possible. Now I read that Labour ministry is taking just a u turn and states something else. this need to be corrected. If it is agreed that major job creation is done in the unorganised sector. The statistics reveal that just 5.7% jobs are reated in the corporatised economy what other ideas the Govt entertains is something beyond understanding. I am dejected. thanks-UDAY PATWARDHAN BMS | Uday Patwardhan BMS 2008-06-06 |
