With the UPA government just going to enter in the final year of its office on May 22, which is also the election year, the chief Opposition BJP has needled for the political fray for the next general poll by targeting the powerful and the most demanding leader-Sonia Gandhi.

Advocating for saving national funds, the Bhartiya Janata Party on Monday objected excessive publicity to Congress president Sonia Gandhi through featuring her in government advertisements in newspapers on a regular basis. The Party demanded immediate disposal of Gandhi's photographs from all the government advertisements in newspapers and stop from spreading corrupt practices.

“The practice is improper and illegitimate. Smt. Sonia Gandhi holds no official position in the government to merit a place in official advertisements,” said BJP's national spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.

‘Although such huge expenses from the public exchequers can not be termed justifiable at any circumstances, yet for a while it could be used so long as she was the chairperson of the National Advisory Council (NAC). But, after her resignation from the chairpersonship of NAC, owing to catch out her in office-of-profit controversy, she is no longer being entitled to figure in government's advertisements,’ the party voiced.

“Sonia Gandhi does not hold any official position in the UPA government. On that ground her photographs should not find a place in advertisements put up by the government at public expenditure,” he added, 'corrupt political practices must be abolished with immediate effect.'

The BJP demanded that the PMO must instruct all ministries, departments and Public Sector Units from keeping aloof from these illegal and corrupt practices.

The BJP said this particularly noticing May 22, when the government will complete its fourth year and enter into the last year of its tenure in office, which is also the election year. If the government remain indulged in this corrupt practice, it will no doubt misuse the full authority of government and took the advantage of unfair media coverage in projecting Sonia Gandhi in advertisements, whose expenses will put extra burden on the government's expenditure.

“So when the UPA government completes four years on May 22, Sonia Gandhi is not projected in the publicity blitz that will be launched on the occasion,” demanded the Saffron Party.

The party said often her photographs were featured more prominently than Prime Minister. Agreed, Dr. Manmohan Singh is a nominated PM by Congress president, yet we hope that direction would be soon issued by his Office in this illegal and unjustified practice.
