Lucknow, Nov 5 (IANS) Turned away by a community health centre, a pregnant woman gave birth on the roadside in Uttar Pradesh, officials said Wednesday.
According to reports, when Jamuna Devi, 26, arrived at a community health centre in Arkha village in Rae Bareli district, health officials there allegedly demanded bribe from her family members.
When her family members objected, the staff at the community centre declined to admit her following which she gave birth to a baby girl on the roadside, officials said.
The incident took place Tuesday night in Arkha village in Rae Bareli district, some 80 km from Lucknow.
When contacted, Rae Bareli Chief Medical Officer Gopal Jee Kumaria told IANS: 'An inquiry has already been ordered into the case.'
'Jamuna Devi and her baby are undergoing treatment in a hospital and both of them are doing fine,' Kumaria said.
