Citi to mobilize thousands of employees on Global Community Day

Mumbai, Wed, 05 Nov 2008 ANI

Mumbai, Nov 05 (ANI/Business Wire India): Citi India employees will join thousands of their colleagues worldwide for the company's third annual "Global Community Day" on November 8.

More than 1,500 employees across 28 towns and cities will dedicate their time and talents to a wide spectrum of community development initiatives addressing specific needs including education, housing, environmental protection, child welfare, senior citizen support, disaster relief and healthcare.

Citi's Global Community Day is a worldwide effort involving projects in hundreds of cities around the world. Recognising that many Citi employees volunteer year-round in their communities, Global Community Day celebrates Citi's volunteer spirit through a one-day global campaign. The inaugural Global Community Day in 2006 saw volunteer participation by more than 30,000 employees, and their family and friends, in over 700 projects in 100 countries.

To fully leverage the enthusiasm that employees have demonstrated for Global Community Day, Citi India has partnered with leading NGOs in each geographic location to jointly design day-long programmes that will help make a meaningful difference to each local community. Each volunteer team, an eclectic mix of employees drawn from different Citi businesses across diverse hierarchies and age groups, will accomplish a clearly defined set of tasks assigned to it.

"A key aspect of our corporate citizenship globally and in India is volunteering. Global Community Day is a great opportunity for our employees to volunteer and actively engage to make a difference in their communities." said Sanjay Nayar, CEO, Citi South Asia.

"I am delighted and proud of the overwhelming response employees across the country have shown towards Global Community Day. Through these activities our employees have the opportunity to apply themselves to very worthwhile causes, and also enjoy the opportunity to meet each other in a relaxing and informal environment," said N. Rajashekaran, Country Business Manager, Global Consumer Group, Citi India.

"On Global Community Day, Citi employees in more than 100 countries around the world will assemble to make a difference in their local communities," said Pamela Flaherty, President and Chief Executive Officer, Citi Foundation and Director, Corporate Citizenship.

"In these difficult times, this community engagement is more important than ever because the needs are so great. Whether it is teaching financial education to young people; planting trees to combat deforestation; refurbishing schools in poor communities, or serving meals to the homeless, Citi employees will turn out to help. Last year, more than 60,000 did so. Global Community Day is one of many ways, from sound business practices to our Foundation programs, that Citi strengthens the communities where we live and work, " Flaherty added. (ANI)
