Fresh militant infiltration along Indo-Pak border

New Delhi, Fri, 09 May 2008 NI Wire

To security forces’ concern of successfully combating counter insurgency operation along the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir, India on Thursday night reported fresh attempt of militant infiltration into Indian-administered region from Pakistan. Though there are speculations of ceasefire violation by Pakistan with firing from Pak rangers but no clarification has come from Indian army.

As per reports coming from the Border Security Forces, militants tried to cross the line of control and also some kind of exchange fire between Pakistan forces and Indian army has been allegedly reported. However, the Indian army at present trying to access the whole situation keeping in mind the strange relation between two nations.

A ceasefire has been in place along the Line of Control since November 2003 after concluding a peace talk. In 2004, the two countries were also agreed upon decreasing number of troops along the border to further facilitate the peace process. Subsequently violent activities have been declined and security forces have been successful in combating terrorism.

Seeing that infiltration is no uncommon in the region, the BSF forces at several instances blamed their counterpart of providing cover-fire when militants try to infiltrate into Indian territory. However, in recent time ever since the ceasefire came into effect, the cross-border terrorism has significantly come down.

If the fresh infiltration proved to be a deliberate attempt to ceasefire violation then certainly it would have a larger impact on the ongoing peace effort by both the nations. In past both countries are actively involved in several confidence building measures to enhance the ongoing peace process which includes the bus routes and railway lines.

It is expected that both countries are going to come with their official statement clarifying whether it was any sort of attempted infiltration by militants or ceasefire violation. This would further signal the improvement in relations between both the countries and also the stand of newly democratic government of Pakistan on that composite dialogue to find out a peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue.
