Sohal's century lifts Punjab against Delhi in Ranji tie

New Delhi, Nov 3 (IANS) Sunny Sohal's century (110) propped Punjab to 237 for five wickets against defending champions Delhi at the end of opening day's play at Roshanara Club here Monday.

Uday Kaul (28) and Ankur Kakkar (30) were at the crease with neither team gaining an upper-hand.

Left-arm medium-pacer Pradeep Sangwan and leg-spinner Chetanya Nanda took two wicket each while former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra dismissed last year's prolific Punjab scorer Karan Goel (2).

This brought Sohal to the middle and he with Ravi Inder Singh (37) stitched a 63-run partnership to steady the Punjab innings. Sohal's hundred came off 177 balls and included 20 fours.

However, once Ravi fell in the 27th over just before lunch, captain Yuvraj Singh failed to carry forward the innings as his poor run continued. He couldn't even open his account as he was caught by first-slip Shikhar Dhawan off Pradeep Sangwan.

Sohal, 20, then had two vital partnerships, first with veteran Pankaj Dhirmani (16) and then Kaul before being caught by Sangwan off leg-spinner Chetanya Nanda.

Delhi's outing was blotted by sloppy fielding with quite a few missed catches in the close-in region.

Brief scores: Delhi 237 for 5 (Sunny Sohal 110, Ravi Inder Singh 37, Ankur Kakkar batting 30, Uday Kaul batting 28, Pradeep Sangwan 2 for 56, Chetanya Nanda 2 for 36)
