Sporting win 1-0 to remain at the top

National,Sports, Sun, 02 Nov 2008 IANS

Kolkata, Nov 1 (IANS) Leaders Sporting Clube de Goa rode on Joseph Pereira's second half strike to get past local outfit Chirag United 1-0 in an I-League match marred by a power failure at the Salt Lake Stadium here Saturday.

The goal came in the 73rd minute when Chirag custodian Gopal Das failed to hold on to a powerful sortie from Nathaniel Amos and an unmarked Pereira netted the rebound.

With 15 points in their kitty from half a dozen fixtures, Sporting continue at the top, while Chirag lie low down at the tenth spot with five points.

Twenty-nine minutes into the opening session, the match was halted for 27 minutes when the floodlights went out, plunging the stadium into total darkness.

The stadium authority later blamed the West Bengal State Electricity Board for the goof-up.

However, it was Chirag which had an edge in the game, with their players enjoying greater ball possession.

The locals came close to scoring in the 61st minute when Muritala Ali, with only Sporting goalkeeper Felix DeSouza to beat, failed to deliver the lethal blow.

The visitors, on the other hand, waited to tire out their opponents and attacked on the counter. And they had the last laugh.
