Govt to boost export of Indian movies

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is now willing to enhance the export of Indian movies. For this, Ministry has made a plan, ‘Export Promotion through film festivals in India and Abroad’ through which it is targeting to promote the export of Indian movies by organising and participating film festivals in India and abroad.

I & B ministry has directed the ‘Directorate of film festival’ to implement the ‘export promotion plan’ through exploring new film festivals in India and abroad. Currently, India participates under existing ‘Participation in Film Market’ plan in few events including International film festival of India, IIFA film festival, Dubai, Cannes film festival, Berlin (Germany) and some private and institutional film festivals. Films are also sent to several Indian embassies for conducting film festivals.

But now, India will seek the participation in all matters, whether organising and conducting new film festivals in India and abroad or participating in more film festivals abroad.

“Films are a medium of cultural export,” said I & B Minister, Priyaranjan Das Munshi in written statement in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. “The conduct of film festivals abroad not only promotes our culture but also facilitates in export of Indian films,” he added.

For boosting film festivals, Ministry has provided additional grant-in-aid to Federation of Film Societies of India and support to NGOs/State Government organisations to organise film festivals in the 11th five-year plan. In this five-year plan, ministry has earmarked Rs. 2069-lakhs as against 982.42-lakhs in the last five-year plan.

The existing I & B scheme, ‘Participation in Film Market’ predicts to provide support, facilitation and promotion of the export potential of the Indian film industry. The scheme’s main object is to cover more film festival events including specific institutionalised international markets with all Indian film festivals like Film Bazaar that held every year along side the International Film Festival of India.

A sum of Rs. 442.85 lakhs have been consumed in the 10th five-year plans while in the current five-year plan, it seeks Rs.1100-lakhs for this scheme.

The Core Group on ‘Export of films and related issues’ had recommended last year in its report along with appraising the existing plan scheme of participation of film market, to form Export Promotion Council. The Ministry is continuously communicating to the film industry for setting up of Export Promotion Council.
