Nalini Sriharan convicted for being involved and serving a life-term in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination has reportedly appealed to the Madras High Court seeking early release. Her lawyer has filed an appeal on her behalf in the court on Wednesday (April 30).
Nalini, one of the members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) assassin squad that killed the then Prime Minister of India and charismatic Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi in a bomb blast in May 21, 1991 is now serving a life term after the Gandhi family intervened to lower the earlier death sentence to a lifer.
Weeks ago, Rajiv Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka Gandhi’s (now Priyanka Vadra) meeting with Nalini at a special prison for women in Vellore on March 19 had sparked media attention. The meeting came into common notice after a lawyer filed an application seeking details of the interaction under the Right to Information Act.
However, the entire incident was surfaced with the statement from Priyanka and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi that it was a personal meeting and hence should be respected.
“I do not believe in anger, hatred and violence and I refuse to allow it any power over my life. Meeting with Nalini was my way of coming to peace with the violence and loss that I have experienced and hence would be deeply grateful if this could be respected," Priyanka was quoted as saying as was released from the Congress party office in a general explanation.
As per the normal life sentence that is accounted for 14 years and because of Nalini has already spent a prison term of 17 years the recent petition for her release is a normal move. However, a failure may lead her to spend another three years under the provision of maximum dentition of 20 years.
