DMRC expansion plan to Noida, Gurgaon approves in principle: Reddy
The Union Urban Development Ministry in a consultative committee meeting on April 29 in New Delhi informed the presented members of approval-in-principle for six new metro rail projects including Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) plan of second phase expansion to Noida and Gurgaon.
Addressing to the present members in the consultative committee meeting, Union Urban Development Minister, Jaipal Reddy said that his Ministry’s objective was to promote public transport and thus it has formulated ‘National Urban Development Policy’.

Under this policy, government is planning to provide more and more public transport and thus Ministry is planning to expand Metro Rail project in other cities. However, he also added, “urban transport is purely a State subject.” But ‘this policy’s main objective is to set a framework for State level policies and strategies’, as per Reddy told the attendants.
“Kochi Metro Rail had been approved in principle as also the Chennai Metro”, said Reddy by adding that Metro Rail proposal for Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore were also being taken up.
“The viability gap funding for Hyderabad Metro has also been approved in principle”, added Reddy. Reddy has also informed to the members regarding DMRC’s second phase expansion plan to Noida and Gurgaon has also been approved in principle.
For implementing the National Urban Transport Policy to boost the pubic transport system, urban Ministry would support to the concerned department, as per Ministry informed.
“The Ministry was providing funds for Metro projects and also viability gap funding through the Finance Ministry for specific transport projects,” said Jaipal.
Besides, Metro rail project, urban Minister also informed the presented members that Ministry has sanctioned Rs. 1602-crore as a Central financial assistance for making the roads of the total length of 359 Kilometers with estimated cost of Rs. 3352 crores for Bus Rapid Transit System projects proposed for 9 cities under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
The Urban Ministry had convened this meeting in national capital in which several legislative members and members of parliament were presented.
