Aerobic exercise to improve cognitive processes

A new study at University of Applied Sciences in Netherlands has found that doing aerobic exercise daily can reduce occasional memory lapses and ability to pay attention in elderly people.


It mentioned that aerobic exercises help boosting mental alertness and improve the concentration on visual and auditory tasks.

During the study the researchers assesses 11 randomises control which comprises 670 adults ages 55 and older, they were examined for the effects of aerobic exercise on their cognitive processes including speed, memory and attention.

The participants followed aerobic exercised for 2-7 days a week regime for three months and were examined for fitness and cognitive function.

The results were then compared with the non exercising persons and those doing yoga or other strength based exercises.

Reportedly eight of the 11 included studies found a major surge in V02 max of the participants by 14%; VO2 is the maximum capacity a person’s ability to utilize oxygen during exhaustive exercise.

Maaike Angevaren said, “Aerobic physical exercises that improve cardiovascular fitness also help boost cognitive processing speed, motor function and visual and auditory attention in healthy older people.”

Angevaren said that these benefits are in addition to other benefit of aerobic exercise known to the world however he mentioned that wide research is needed to confirm the same or find whether other form of physical exercise can do.

The study is published in The Cochrane Library, a publication of The Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research.

Gradually in the process of aging older people experiences decline in cognitive processes and this result also suggest that regular exercises helps in healthy ageing process.

The lead author also mentioned that improvement of cognitive processes as a result of aerobic exercises can be explained by the improvements of cerebral blood flaw which in turn increases the metabolism in brain stimulating neurotransmitters production and new synapses in the brain.

However the researcher feel that large scale study has to be carried to firmly reach the conclusion and prescribing elderly people a dose of daily aerobic exercises.
