JD (U) releases list of candidates after failing talks with BJP

New Delhi, Fri, 18 Apr 2008 NI Wire

The two NDA partners BJP and JD (U) appears to be travelling on parallel tracks in Karnataka as JD (U) on Friday released its own list of 25 candidates to contest in forthcoming Karnataka elections after an unsuccessful talk between the two parties.

The BJP on Wednesday issued its third list accompanying 14 names and the party’s Karnataka unit indicated to issue the final list of 37 names soon in one or two days. The party has announced to contest on 187 seats of the total of 224 assembly seats.

However as per the source BJP was bargaining hard on the issue of seat sharing with its NDA ally and was ready to leave around a dozen seats instead of 25 seats upon which the JD (U) had contested last year.

After being failed to reaching any understanding it seems that both the parties have separated their ways in the state, which is in contrary to the BJP’s Central command was of the opinion that both the NDA alliance should fray the election together.

So far the BJP has denied of any separation and hopeful of reaching any consensus as BJP general secretary and in-charge of Karnataka Anant Kumar expressed its desire of possible understanding over seat sharing would be materialised in just couple of days.

As per the media sources, the JD (U) were being offered mere eight seats of which four seats were those, which they had won in last election and the rest four they had not clamoured for.

JD (U) president Sharad Yadav accused BJP for infringing coalition dharma for not holding pre-announcement discussion while issuing the list of candidates and criticised the party for announcing its own list of 136 candidates so far without any consultation with his party.

Sources say that JD (U) will soon hold a meeting with its state leadership for deciding the probable strategy for the future course of action.

Earlier the BJP’s in-charge of Karnataka unit Arun Jaitley had said that the charges were baseless, the party only announced the candidates’ name for its own sure seats, and doors are open for its NDA ally JD (U) for accommodation in Karnataka.

The party sources in BJP said that JD (U) must realise that Bharatiya Janata Party is strong and its senior partner in Karnataka. So, there is no question of distribution of seats on equal numbers.

Meanwhile, the Bihar unit of BJP has its own reason of justification. The Bihar unit has frequently complained to the national leadership for being sided into a corner by the JD (U) in the state by stating that if he did not obeyed the coalition dharma how could he plead for that being violated in Karnataka.

Arun Jaitley too reminded Yadav the period of November 2005 Bihar assembly election when he had declared its own sure seats in the state prior to consulting BJP.

Meanwhile, the sources say that dissatisfaction over the allotment of the party ticket to fight the forthcoming elections has also erupted within the BJP itself for not providing representation to any of the minorities in the list of candidates.

Both the BJP and JD-U as a NDA alliance had jointly contested the 1999 and 2004 Karnataka assembly polls. The BJP considering its strong position and confident of getting good mandate this time has put up candidates in seats, where the JD-U wanted to raise its members.
