Tottenham sack coach Ramos, to appoint Redknapp

Europe, Sun, 26 Oct 2008 IANS

London, Oct 26 (DPA) Bottom placed English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur sacked coach Juande Ramos after their worst ever start to a season.

The Spaniard was given his marching orders, along with sporting director Damien Comolli and first-team's assistant coaches Gus Poyet and Marcos Alvarez. The club is now set to appoint Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp as Ramos's replacement.

'Once Tottenham came in and once the offer was made it was difficult for the club to turn down a 5-million-pound ($8 million) offer for a manager,' Redknapp told Sky Sports.

'The club were pleased to take it and hopefully people will remember what I've done there. I've got some good memories and I have had some great times there.'

Redknapp said the 5 million pounds would cover the compensation payment to Portsmouth to secure his early departure.

The 61-year-old Redknapp will take charge of a Spurs side that are bottom of the league, with just two points from their opening eight matches.

Ramos led Spurs to Carling Cup joy in his first season in charge.
