Rastriya Janashakti Party says Maoists integration threatens peace in Nepal

Kathmandu, Sat, 25 Oct 2008 ANI

Kathmandu, Oct 25 (ANI): The Chairman of Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) Surya Bahadur Thapa has said that the integration of Maoist combatants into the national army would pose serious threats to democracy, peace and stability in Nepal.

Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Thapa suggested that Maoist combatants be managed properly elsewhere, but not in the army.

"The politically indoctrinated Maoist combatants should not be integrated in the national army, with its apolitical and professional character," he said.

He said the Maoists were misusing state funds to feed its Young Communist League (YCL) cadres who oppress cadres of rival political parties. Such practice would derail the ongoing peace process.

Thapa also said that the parliamentary system of democracy is the most suitable model of governance in Nepal and that any other form would mean the emergence of totalitarianism, Kantipur reported. (ANI)
