Centre in rescue of Delhi's power crisis

New Delhi, Tue, 15 Apr 2008 NI Wire

As Delhi is moving for November assembly elections, the Centre has come in its rescue by allotting almost double the power needs of the present 299 MW. The decission came after a meeting between Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and Union Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh on Sunday.

The city despite being the capital of the country has been witnessing stiff power shortage over the years, which is on habitually aggravated during summer with rising demand. As of now the capital gets 22 percent of Centre’s unallocated power reserve, which would be now increased to 40 percent taking the net amount to 450 MW.

Without any permanent solution at present the residence of Delhi on a regular basis faces power cuts every year and so in this summer. Power cuts during every summer months have become prolonged with four to eight hours a day distressing lakhs of consumers.

However this time, taking a safe stand as the state government is heading towards elections, the chief minister has no other options but to knock Centre’s door. The Congress led UPA government too has extended its support in providing some relief as the government at Centre too facing criticism over rising food and oil price with an inflation, which is at its fastest pace touching a 4 year high of 7.41 pc.

The Power Minister Jairam Ramesh also announced that Delhi would be regularly getting 200 MW of power from the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) from next month onwards.

The government of Delhi for a temporary case had also sought permission from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory commission (DERC) to use power generated by diesel-fired gensets owned by private players. This can be considered as an instant solution to the power crisis only during the peak-hours.

By how far these measures suggesting by the Delhi government and the Centre’s allocation of more power supply to the capital would come at par public’s expectation and rescue them from acute shortage of electricity, the time would say.
