The All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi’s statement of having 14 teams for the second edition of the I-League in his interview with fifa.com has provided a much-needed breather to few of the clubs over their dwindling future as they could be facing the axe of relegation by being the bottom placed team in the inaugural I-league.
The announcement of 14 teams in the I-League second edition will surely be good news and a blessing in disguise as far as Salgaocar and Viva Kerala clubs are concerned, as they are standing at the doorstep of relegation for finishing at the bottom of the 10-team inaugural I-League.
The AIFF president was at the FIFA headquarters to give the status report of the much-hyped ‘Win in India with India’ project to FIFA president Joseph Blatter. "Next year there will be 14 teams and we aim to have 16 by 2012, a 14-team second division and a 10-team third division as well," Dasmunsi quoted the FIFA website.
AIFF President Dasmunsi also painted a rosy picture of Indian football. He had words full of praise for the under-16 boys who made it to the final round of the AFC tournament in Uzbekistan in October. "They are our future," he proudly said.
On the senior national team, Dasmunsi said, "The results of the senior team have not been satisfactory so far and that is why we are planning to stick to the FIFA international calendar of friendly matches."
