June 13: Orissa High Court issued a notice yesterday demanding the Orissa government and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to explain their stand on the ban imposed on Buddhia for not running or walking any long distance.
Budhia Singh, the celebrity in Orissa, came into lime light last year for his seven hour long run in which he covered 65 km and registered his name in the Limca Book of Records. Budhia shot to fame instantaneously and came to be known as the ‘Marathon Boy’ and a local celebrity.
However, the CWC and other welfare organization criticized Budhia’s coach for endangering the child’s health. The state government imposed a ban on the purposed 500 km walkathon form Bhubaneswar to Kolkata, scheduled on June 6.
In response Budhia and his supporters filed a petition challenging the ban imposed by Khurda district CWC. Justice A.S.Naidu on Tuesday served the show cause notice.
Meanwhile, the CWC has served another notice against Budhia’s coach Biranchi Das for allegedly collecting money in the name of Budhia.
Mr. Das, a Judo trainer, adopted Budhia by paying a mere sum of Rs 800 to the person who had bought him from his poor mother. Later on after noticing the child’s extra potential he trained him for long distance running and took care of all his medical and training needs. But the Orissa government, after conducting thorough medical check-ups, declared that Budhia was undernourished and suffered from other symptoms relating cardio-vascular problems. On the basis of these reports the government imposed a ban on his running.
However, his coach and other organizations that support Budhia are repeatedly denying this and challenged the ban. In the meantime the court has ordered the next hearing, which will be on June 21.
