Martyn guides World XI to victory

A sparkling unbeaten half-century by Damien Martyn (67) ably supported by Lou Vincent (43) enabled World XI to India XI by eight wickets in the ICL 20s World Series opening match played at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium here on Wednesday night.


Chasing the target of 142 set by India XI, ICL World XI romped home with consummate ease after scoring 145 runs for the loss of two wickets in 18.3 overs.

The highlight of the World XI innings and the innings that made the whole difference in the end was an unbeaten 67 scored by Martyn off just 53 deliveries, which included ten boundaries.

Vincent also made valuable contribution of 43 runs off 32 balls that included six fours and a six. Marvan Atapattu (25) also remained unbeaten. World team lost their first wicket for seven runs in the form of IJ Harvey (5) who was well caught by Murtaza of the bowling off Vignesh.

The second wicket fell at the score of 79 when Kumaran caught Vincent of S T R Binny’s bowling. G Vignesh and Binny was the pick of the bowlers from India XI as they picked up one wicket each by conceding 28 and 32 runs respectively.

Earlier opting to bat, ICL India XI made 141 runs for 5 wickets in their stipulated 20 overs. T P Singh guided the team to a respectable total after scoring an unbeaten 63 from 49 deliveries that included eight fours and one six.

Binny who also remained unbeaten after scoring a quick-fire 27 ball 37, with the help of two fours and one six.

Rohan Gavaskar hit 30 from 27 balls, including two hits to fence and one six. Promising Ambati Rayudu, who played a good innings in earlier matches, was surprisingly run out for one run.

Skipper R Sathish returned to pavilion without troubling the scorers, he was brilliant caught by Cairns in the bowling of Van der Wath. ICL India XI faced an early collapse after losing four quick wickets in the form of AA Jhunjhunwala, G Vignesh, A T Rayudu and R Sathish for just nine runs at the end of the third over.

It was Gavaskar who provided some resistance to India team playing alongwith T P Singh, as the duo added crucial 61 runs for the fifth wickets to keep the scoreboard moving. JJ Van der Wath bowled with a good line and length and was duly rewarded with two wickets for his performance while D R Tuffey claimed just one-wicket after conceding 27 runs.
