Kalyan under curfew ahead of Raj Thackeray's court appearance
Kalyan (Thane), Oct 22 (ANI): Curfew has been clamped in Kalyan, a city in the Thane district of Maharashtra, from 11:00 a.m. as Maharashtara Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray is scheduled to be produced in a court here today.
While Raj's counsel has moved a bail application, the prosecution will try its best to get it cancelled and secure his custody.
MNS chief had spent the last night in jail after the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate denied him bail in connection with the attack on students from Bihar and other north Indian states appearing for Railway Board Examination on Sunday, allegedly by his party workers.
Yesterday, Raj, who secured granted bail in Kherwadi case, was sent to judicial custody till November 4 by a suburban magistrate's court in Bandra. He was produced before the judge after being arrested by Mumbai Police from Ratnagiri.
The Police also imposed a two-month gag order on Raj, in a bid to prevent him from addressing public rallies and talking to the media.
The Mumbai Police arrested Raj from a guest house in Ratnagiri after a case was registered against him following Sunday's attack by MNS workers on North Indian candidates appearing in a rail exam in suburb Kherwadi.
Raj has been charged under Sections 153, 353, 336, 425 and 427 of IPC, police sources said. His arrest has triggered violence across Maharashtra, with the police resorting to lathi-charge in several parts to dispel the protesters. (ANI)
