Centre approves 18 projects in Chhattisgarh to improve destitute

The Centre on April 08 has approved 14 projects under Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) and 4 projects under the Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) in Chhattisgarh for enhancing the living condition of the destitute in the state, as published in a government release.


Both the projects have been approved by Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee and Central Sanctioning Committee on April 08, 2008.

According to the press release, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation has approved those 14 projects of worth Rs. 176.50-crore under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) for making 14846 dwelling units in entire Chhattisgarh. For this, the Ministry of Finance has released Rs. 61-crore as additional central assistance while remaining Rs. 61.0-crore of Central’s share would be released later. The State government will bear Rs. 54.49-crore.

The Monitoring Committee has also approved four projects under the Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme for providing capital’s destitute new dwelling and uplifting their life up to some extent. The total estimated cost of this project is Rs.391.45-crore in which Central will share Rs.156.10-crore while state will bear the remaining 79.26-crore. The Ministry of Finance has quick released 25% money (Rs.78.05-crore) as the first installment.

Under, the IHSDP scheme, 14846 units of the new dwelling would be constructed across the state while under BSUP scheme; government would construct 27976 new dwelling units in Raipur, the capital of the state for the capital’s slum areas poor.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in December 2005 had launched both these scheme for elevating the decrepit condition of the slum are as people. Under IHSDP scheme, all the towns except 63 cities have been selected for constructing the dwelling while the remaining 63 towns would come under BSUP scheme.

The BSUP scheme will comes under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) while IHSDP scheme will also include the existing Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) and interrupted National Slum Development Programme (NSDP) in itself.

The primary object of this scheme is to facilitate urban environment by providing adequate shelter and basic infrastructure services to the urban slum dwellers.
