Manmohan Singh arrives in Japan

Tokyo, Oct 21 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived here on Tuesday for summit talks with his Japanese counterpart Taro Aso during which they are expected to discuss a joint strategy to overcome the global financial crisis and possible cooperation in the civil nuclear energy sector.

 

Dr. Singh visit will bolster the India-Japan strategic and security ties. Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone accorded the Prime Minister a warm welcome upon his arrival at the Tokyo International Airport.

 

"I consider our bilateral relations with Japan to be one of the most important bilateral relationships we have. A strong India-Japan relationship will play a significant role in the emerging Asian security architecture and will contribute to the peace, stability and prosperity of Asia and the world," Dr. Singh said ahead of his arrival here.

 

Aso also expressed the hope that Dr. Singh's visit to Japan will give a renewed momentum to the enhancement of the Japan-India relations.

 

During his visit Dr. Singh and Aso are expected to ink the security agreement. Sources said that security agreement will have a a broad new framework which will be ranging from counter terrorism to the protection of sea lanes, extended engagements of militaries and joint missions on the Indian ocean and Asia pacific.

 

The dedicated freight corridor between New Delhi and Mumbai which was initiated three years ago by Dr. Singh and then Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and 1468 km long industrial corridor may also see the light of the day as Tokyo is expected to shell out four billion dollars loan for this project during the visit.

 

Officials say that Aso is keen in implementing this ambitious project which is touted as the largest infrastructure project ever taken by India.

 

Indian premier will also be co-chairing the Indo Japan business forum and will also meet the chairman of Japanese chambers of commerce before moving on to Beijing for ASEM summit which kickstarts on October 24. (ANI)
