Obama to suspend poll campaign for a day to visit ailing grandmother

Washington, Oct 21 (ANI): US Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is expected to suspend his campaign trail for one full day this weekend to see his seriously ailing grandmother, who raised him as a child along with his mother and grandfather.

Senior advisor in Obama's campaign programme, Robert Gibbs said she was released from hospital late last week but had not improved.

"In the last few weeks her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious. It is for that reason Senator Obama has decided to change his schedule on Thursday and Friday so that he can see her and spend some time with her. He will be returning to the campaign trail on Saturday," The Telegraph quoted him as saying.

But, Gibbs declined to reveal the nature of her illness.

"Senator Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has always been one of the most important people in his life. Along with his mother and his grandfather, she raised him in Hawaii from the time he was born until the moment he left for college. As he said at the Democratic Convention, she poured everything she had into him," Gibbs said in a statement.

According to the paper, with a change in Obama's campaign schedule, events originally planned for Madison, Wisconsin, and Des Moines in Iowa on Thursday will be replaced with one in Indianapolis before Obama makes the long flight to Hawaii.

It is not known what time he will return to the campaign on Saturday, added the paper.

During his election speeches, Obama often makes references to his grandmother, mentioning that she worked on a B-1 bomber assembly plant during World War Two. Later, she worked as a secretary in a bank and was eventually promoted to vice president. She helped put Obama through private school in Hawaii. (ANI)
