`God was on my side,' says Hamilton after Shanghai Grand Prix victory

London, Oct.20 (ANI): Formula One ace Lewis Hamilton has thanked the almighty for his latest victory in the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on Saturday.

The British ace opened up a seven-point lead with just one grand prix left after crushing his rivals in Shanghai yesterday.

"All weekend we had God on our side. I can only dream of what it would be like to be world champion. I can't think of winning the championship because, however amazing it could be, it's never done until it's done. But that's what I work towards every day of my life. I will continue to do the best job I can," The Sun quoted Hamilton, as saying.

"Hopefully one day I will be world champion and my country and my family will be proud. The team did a fantastic job to give me a great car here," the 23-year-old racer added.

Hamilton will become the youngest champion in F1's 59-year history if he finishes fifth or higher in Brazil on Sunday week.

The McLaren racer, who wears a gold crucifix around his neck, shrugged off Ferrari gifting second place to Felipe Massa even though team orders are officially banned in Formula One.

The Brazilian claimed the extra two points having run third for much of the race when team-mate Kimi Raikkonen produced a slow lap close to the finish.

Hamilton added: "It was inevitable that Kimi would let Felipe by. They're a team and I know if it was in my position, if Heikki Kovalainen was leading, we would probably do the same thing. It's playing together as a team and they did a great job."

Hamilton is not worried about returning to the scene of last year's bitter title defeat for another final race showdown.

The Hertfordshire-born star went to Brazil leading Raikkonen by seven points and missed out by one.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis said: "We don't have to win the race to give Lewis his first championship. We have to relax and put Lewis in an environment where he is not thinking about motor racing at all for the next week." (ANI)
