Uttar Pradesh fixes Rs.140 per quintal of sugarcane

National, Sun, 19 Oct 2008 IANS

Lucknow, Oct 18 (IANS) The Uttar Pradesh government Saturday revised the sugarcane purchase price for all sugar mills in the state from Rs.125 to Rs.140 per quintal.

Making the announcement at a press conference here, Chief Minister Mayawati said: 'The fixation of price was done after an exhaustive study of various factors and in consultation with all the parties involved.'

To a query on how the state would ensure implementation of the price by sugar mills who have a history of entering into legal battles against the government recommended cane price, state Chief Secretary Atul Gupta told IANS: 'This exercise of making the mill-owners sit across the table with sugarcane growers and market experts has been undertaken for the first time by any government here, so we see no cause for litigation.'

Meanwhile, writ petitions moved by some sugar mill owners were still pending before the Supreme Court as well as the Allahabad High Court against the earlier price of Rs. 110 per quintal fixed by the state government for the year 2006-07 as well as Rs.125 fixed for the year 2007-08.

U.P .Government has broken all the previous records by increasing State Advised Price (SAP) @ 140/ per quintal of sugarcane for general variety and Rs 145/ for early variety for season 2008-09. BSP by declaring this price, has increased Rs 15/ per quintal over previous year. In the year 2004-05 maximum increase was Rs 12/ per quintal by the Mulayam Government . Ravindra Singh standing counsel Ganna Sangh /Cane Societies has welcome the price and said that Sugar mills have full potential to pay this sugarcane price honestly without litigating it as the same is a genuine price. He said though he wanted that the price should be at least 50% more than the weighted average cost of production as recommended by the National Commission on Farmer?s Chaired by Dr.M.S Swaminathan in 2006. Mr Singh being a special invitee in the core committee has suggested that SAP should be as per report of the National Commission on Farmer?s together with the fact that the CACP itself in it?s supplementary report of March, 2008 has recommended SMP @142 Plus Bonus
