Bomb found, detonated in Agra

National, Fri, 17 Oct 2008 IANS

Agra, Oct 17 (IANS) A battery operated bomb was found in the city of the Taj Mahal and had to be detonated after the bomb disposal squad failed to defuse it, police said Friday.

The bomb was found in a locality under the Etmauddaula police station Thursday. It had to be blasted in Chalesar wasteland near the Yamuna river after the bomb disposal squad failed to defuse it. The exercise took more than seven hours.

A police official said the bomb was of high intensity and could have led to a tragedy if it had not been found.

However, district magistrate Anil Kumar said the bomb was not of high intensity and it was not clear if it had been planted by a terrorist group.

'The bomb was small and has now been destroyed. But we have to be careful,' he said.

Two weeks ago the district administration received threats of serial blasts in the city.
